2004 Loudon vs. FultonRedskins Can’t Hold On, Fall to the Falcons, 22-13Article by Jeff McQueen
The Loudon Quarterback Club teams were the invited guests of Redskin Head Coach Harig. In a pre-game ceremony, the five cheerleading squads and the four football teams lined up on the visitor’s sideline, it was a sea of red! Their respective records and coaches were introduced as they streamed across the field. With a combined record of 22-2, the LQC is having an excellent season. The Captains for the Redskins were #3 Brandon Dixon, #24 Josh Hawkins, #79 John Paul Hackney, and #80 Josh McQueen. Loudon won the toss, and deferred until the second half. To start the game, Fulton, the defending state champions, got an 18 yard kick off return, and started on the 28 yard line. The Falcons were three and out, as the “Big Red Wall” forced a punt. A three yard rush by #24 Josh Hawkins, and two incomplete passes by quarterback #4 Cody Fritts had Loudon punting as well. Fritts got off a 39 yard punt, and with a 15 yard return, Fulton is in business on the 45 yard line. An incomplete pass and a two yard rush brought up third down and eight. The Falcon QB was again back to pass, breaking in front of the receiver was #7 Mark Harrison for the interception. The ‘Skins would take over on the 23 yard line, however they were three and out, and punted. A nine play Falcon drive ate up 5:13 and 60 yards. Fulton drove down to the Redskin 12 yard line, #80 Josh McQueen and #79 John Paul Hackney combined for a sack of -3 yards. The Falcons settled for a 32 yard field goal on fourth down. With the ensuing kick off, Loudon starts a nine play drive that spans the first and second quarters. A 13 yard completion from Fritts to #3 Brandon Dixon was good for a first down. Dixon rushed twice for five yards, and a pass to Hawkins for four yards left it fourth and short. With the ball on the Redskin 46 yard line, Fritts was in punt formation. The up back, #24 Josh Hawkins grabs the snap and fires a pass down field to #86 Jesse Henry, which was complete for 22 yards and the first down. That play kept the drive alive, but Loudon failed to convert and turned the ball over on downs. Fulton takes over on the 24 yard line, but on the first play, the ball squirts loose and is recovered by Jesse Henry. The ‘Skins take over on the 31 yard line and assaulted the end zone on the third play. #24 Josh Hawkins takes it to pay dirt from 19 yards out (2-pt. conv failed). This electrified the Redskin “D”, who forced the Falcons three and out. The Fulton long snapper did his job, but the punter fumbled the ball. In a mad scramble, the loose ball was recovered by the Falcons. However it was first and 10, Redskins; with the ball on the 15 yard line. The waggle pass, from Fritts to Dixon was good for the Redskin touchdown. With the extra point kick by #4 Cody Fritts, the ‘Skins lead 13-3, at half time. During a ceremony at half time, the members of the 1974 Redskin Undefeated State Championship Team were introduced. This event commemorated the 30 year anniversary of the dream season, a perfect 12-0 finish. Loudon would fumble the ball away, on the opening drive of the third quarter. Fulton returned the favor, as #7 Mark Harrison gets his second interception of the game. The Redskins punted and with a 66 yard return by #2 Elliot Bishop, the Falcons have the short field. From the 21 yard line, Fulton needed just four plays to score, a three yard surge. With the score now 13-9, Redskins, let’s move ahead to the fourth stanza. The Falcons would score again, with 9:43 left in the game. The lead now belongs to Fulton, 15-13. Loudon and the Falcons would swap punts. #4 Cody Fritts injured his throwing shoulder, and was replaced by sophomore #32 Seth Lyle at quarterback. There was 7:03 left to play. The ‘Skins would need only eight plays to go 55 yards, down to the Fulton two yard line. Hawkins got all the carries in the drive, the longest being 34 yards, plus a 15 yard facemask penalty tacked on. Hawkins for one, down to the one yard line. On second and goal, Josh Hawkins was stacked up for no gain. On third down and goal, Lyle takes the ball wide, and gives ground; the ball squirts loose and is recovered by the Falcons. With 1:52 remaining in the game, a defensive stop was needed. Two Falcon rushes yielded six yards. The Redskins stacked the box; in anticipation of a dive play, on third down. The deal breaker was #6 Jam Fine who busted an 89 yard touchdown to put the game out of reach. On a bazaar play and a strange twist of fate, the Redskins went from first and goal on the two yard line (a TD or field goal would have won the game), to coughing up the ball, and giving up a long touchdown. Defensively, freshman #42 Ben Everett got the start at linebacker, he played well. #53 Jimmy McQueen logged several stops for no gain, #86 Jesse Henry had his best game to date, #7 Mark Harrison had two interceptions, and #81 Adam Russell caught the ball well, blocked a Fulton pass, and recorded two sacks. The final score was 22-13, Fulton Falcons. Let me remind you Redskin fans, last season the ‘Skins were 1-5 going into the Scott Co. game (Scott was 5-1 at that point). The Big Red rebounded, and posted a 4-6 record. We’re just one game off that pace now. In this “BIG I” paradigm, we want out team #1, no waiting in line at Food City, our fast food now… instant gratification if you will. Losing is never easy to stomach, being 0-6 is hard on the fans, team, players, and coaches alike. Hard work beats talent, when talent won’t work. Hard work is going to pay off this season!
The Loudon “War Party” will travel to Huntsville, to battle the Scott Co. Highlanders in another crucial regional battle. Game time is 7:30 pm. |
